All's Well That Ends Well was for most of its stage life regarded as an unpleasant and unsuccessful play. Russell Fraser was one of the few Editors to take a more positive view of the play in the earlier edition of this book back in the 1980s. Northrop Frye addressed the crux of the problem in noting that Shakespeare simply inverted the usual formula of young lovers defying their elders with elders successfully forcing a man to marry the woman of their choice. But wasn't this more common in Shakespeare's time than the first situation? It seems more unpleasant simply because we have a bias in favor of the young living their own lives good or bad. But it's at least as likely that older people are better judges of what would be a good match than the young blooming idiots are. In a way All's Well deals in the humiliation of individuals and how they handle it. In their different ways, Helena, Parolles, Bertram and even the King find their will thwarted and their persons subject to abuse and disdain, in the King's case by his disease and perhaps to a lesser extent by the resistance of Bertram to the match.In this updated edition Alexander Leggatt has provided a new, cogent and well balanced Introduction with an emphasis on the more recent performance history of the play up to the 1990s. His writing style is lucid and non stuffy. Highly recommended.
